Frequently Asked Questions

I bought my transponder today. When can I actually drive through a toll?

You MUST register the transponder online first. Once registered:

  • PA Turnpike: Ready to use in 24 hours.
  • Other E-ZPass States (e.g., NJ, NY, MD): Ready to use in 48 hours.

What happens if my E-ZPass doesn’t read in the toll lane?

If your transponder does not read, the following typically occurs:

  1. The tolling system will take a picture of your license plate.
  2. It will automatically check the PA E-ZPass database for an account linked to that license plate.
  3. If your account is in good standing and linked to the plate, the E-ZPass rate will still be deducted from your balance, and you will not receive a violation.

Where is the best place to mount the E-ZPass transponder on my windshield?

Proper placement is critical to ensure a reading:

  • Placement: Place the transponder on the inside of your windshield, usually behind the rearview mirror.
  • Position: It should be positioned below any sun-shade tinting (the black dots/shaded area) and in a spot where it is not obscured by the rearview mirror itself.
  • Orientation: The E-ZPass logo should be facing you (upright).

Note: If your car has a metallic, solar-tinted, or heated windshield, contact the PA Turnpike Customer Service Center. You may need an exterior license plate transponder to ensure it reads correctly.

Can I use my PA E-ZPass in other states?

Yes. The PA E-ZPass is part of the E-ZPass Group, meaning it is accepted in every state that uses the E-ZPass system (including New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, and many others in the Northeast and Midwest).

How much does a PA E-ZPass cost?

There is no annual fee for a standard PA E-ZPass account. You’ll need to preload your account with a minimum balance, which is used to pay tolls.

How do I get a PA E-ZPass?

You can sign up online through the Pennsylvania E-ZPass website, or visit a PA E-ZPass Customer Service Center like us at John’s Auto Tags.

How long does it take to receive a PA E-ZPass?

If you order online, your transponder typically arrives by mail within 7–10 business days. In-person signups may provide a transponder immediately.

Is PA E-ZPass cheaper than paying tolls with cash or Toll-by-Plate?

Yes. E-ZPass users generally receive lower toll rates compared to cash or Toll-by-Plate payments on Pennsylvania toll roads.

Can I have more than one vehicle on my PA E-ZPass account?

Yes. You can add multiple vehicles to one account, but each vehicle must be registered and may require its own transponder depending on usage.

How do I add money to my PA E-ZPass account?

You can set up automatic replenishment, make one-time payments online, pay by phone, or add funds at select customer service locations.
